12 Days of Legit Transformation – Day 8: How to create breathing space

I remember the day I started breathing.

I’d been going to yoga for a few years, beginning the practice my last year in Seattle, then continuing when I moved to Vegas. While I learned how to breathe deeper in yoga, I didn’t really learn how to use my breath as a release.

It wasn’t until I started meditating, something I was inspired to try after reading Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, that I really started breathing.

I found this surprising!  I’d always been a singer and had played the flute up through high school.  Didn’t I understand the power of my breath?

Short answer: nope.

Breathing, during yoga, singing and playing an instrument, is a tool.  And a wonderful, amazing one at that!

But breathing during meditation creates magic.  It’s the sole focus. The intention.  The release.

Much more than a tool, it IS your purpose during those precious 15 minutes (my usual meditation time – although in Peru I managed to meditate for 1 hour!).

When I took my first “real” breath I never expected the positive ripple effect it would create in my life.

As part of my own transformation, meditating and breathing helped to release the clenching stress that often lingered in my tummy pains.  It helped me get clear on the direction I wanted to take in my life. Not only could my lungs breathe better, but my mind had room to breathe without all my busy thoughts!

When I look back, it wasn’t just the breathing that helped in my transformation, it was the fact that I allowed myself to get creative, be inspired by a book, then step outside of my usual routine.

Like the butterfly, we have abilities that may be hidden, and by getting a little creative, allowing them to assist us in transformation, we just may experience a greater sense of breathing room…
