Have you ever secretly wanted to do something that you knew would really make a difference in people’s lives, but it terrified you to the bone to think about actually doing it?
I did two of these things in June.
And I still can’t believe that I did them!
You know what I’m talking about, right?
The things that will have people thinking you’re crazy.
That make your soul sweat.
Your heart quiver.
Your tummy toss.
That you’ll be way too scared to do anyway, so why even try?
Better give up before you even get started because those things…well, they are just outrageous!
Today, I’m sharing with you one of the terrifying things I did and how I moved past the fear and excuses in order to just DO IT.
Drum roll pleassssseeeee…
I SANG ON STAGE!
I know!!! Crazy, right?
I really wish I could share with you a video of my performance, but I was an intro speaker to the program, so the videographer didn’t get me on film (just a good reason for me to do it again!).
Here’s a couple pictures from my performance…
To give you an idea of what audience members heard, here’s an overview of my talk/song:
I had the audience close their eyes, and then launched them into a vision of their own “Willy Wonka Land” where I sang the intro to “Pure Imagination,” the song Willy Wonka sings as he leads the lucky golden ticket winners down the steps and into his magical candy land garden:
Come with me, and you’ll be, in a world of pure imagination…take a look and you’ll see into your imagination.
There you have it! Just a couple lines, followed by the rest of my talk. It was the most I’ve ever sang by myself on stage EVER.
How did I do it?
Here’s a few things that really led me to feel solid in knowing I could do it:
#1 Remembering other times when I demonstrated I could sing in front of people.
Sure, I was 8 years old and I made all my friends sit down while I stood up, pushed the tape recorder to play and performed along with the sensual voice of Janet Jackson. “Like a moth to a flame, burnin’ by the fire…my love is strong, can’t you see my desire? That’s the way love goes…” Yup, I sang it. The entire. Freaking. Song. It was my birthday. Can you blame a girl for knowing she’d have a captive audience? HAHA. And I owned that performance! Remembering this, even though it was several decades ago, reminded me that I had it in me!
#2 Considering the worst case scenario.
For me, the worst thing that could have happened would have been my voice freezing up completely, with no sound but the gasp for air escaping my lungs. Or, having some crickety rickety out-of-tune noise squeak by, dousing the audience with a worthy reason to plug their ears. By accepting this, I reminded myself that I’m not what people think of me. If I completely F this performance up, hey, those who love me will still Legit Love me.
#3 Giving myself permission to opt-out.
I made a deal with myself that if I felt I absolutely didn’t have it in me to perform on stage, the moment while I was waiting backstage to go on, I would allow myself to just speak the words instead. No one would ever know. I hadn’t told anyone specifically for that reason. Providing yourself with an out, is a strange dichotomy – on one end, it feels safe because you know you don’t have to do that scary thing you set out to do; on the other, it makes you want to keep the promise to yourself even more.
As a Legit Lover, I know that you have something looking up at you from your soul, peering into your eyes with that look of desire, begging to be unleashed.
My wish is that my performance will be inspiring to you, moving you to take your own action towards that “scary” thing for one big fat reason alone:
It will transform your life and the world with Legit Love because you took the bold, brave step to do it, honoring your own transformational power within!
