How many times have you danced around the house with so much joy in every move of your body…then stopped when you caught someone watching?
How many times have you let every ounce of your soul pour out into a glorious poem…then hid it as soon as someone wanted to read it?
How many times do we stop ourselves from self-expression because we feel:
-afraid to let our freak flag fly?
-terrified of being “found out” for who we really are?
-embarrassed that we might not look “professional”
I have felt all of these things. And more.
As a creative entrepreneur and professional I oftentimes wonder how far I can push things. What will be accepted as unique, but not too weird? As fun, but not too crazy? As creative but not too “out there?”
I’ve always been drawn to innovation, reinvention, revitalization of performance, art and expression that makes me burst with passion and excitement and ignites every centimeter of my nerve endings.
I. Want. To. Feel.
So many times I hold myself back from sharing this part of me when I’m on stage because, well, it “might” be too risky.
But what really happens when we deny this part of ourselves that wants to shine and share?
We deny the very part of us that I believe allows us to experience happiness in our lives. It’s the driver of all things: Legit Love for ourselves.
I once heard a piece of advice, probably from an interview I was listening to, or a book I read, that said: when we deny what we want to express, we deny the gifts we have been given, and therefore, we’re telling God that he didn’t make us “good enough.”
Lately, I’ve been using my time on stage in front of attentive groups of people as an opportunity to push myself to share my soul-infused expression. By doing this, ultimately, I’m Legit Loving Myself. Letting the true me shine, and releasing any and all expectation of what the audience will think.
It’s still scary as hell. The difference is, now I know that holding back this part of my self in the long-run will be even more scary.
So, what do I do?
I face the fear and do it anyway.
Take a look at my most recent Legit Love expression by watching the video below where I performed a poetry piece at my 2nd Sensory EXPLOSION event. It was terrifying. I wasn’t sure I was going to do it. I left it towards the very end of the evening, just in case I decided I didn’t have the gusto to do it. But, the great news is, I DID perform it! I still haven’t watched the video, but I’m going to share it with you in the hopes it sparks some sort of desire in your soul to do something similar. P.S. I did this the day after I sang on stage! (I’m on a roll!!)
My wish for you is that you will embrace the expressive part of you. You will love her. Nurture her. Then, share her with the world, no matter how scary it might seem.
It could be journaling about that vision that you keep having, then posting a few lines from your brilliant wisdom to Facebook for all to be inspired by.
It could be grabbing your love and playfully twirling around the living room as you dance with no inhibitions.
It could be singing at the top of your lungs in the car…with the windows down, and smiling at the people staring at you.
By taking action on your desire for self expression, you are truly giving a gift to the world. By Legit Loving yourself, you are Legit Loving each and every person in your life.
In advance, as you prepare to share something from your soul, let me say THANK YOU!
What form of Self Expression are you wanting to unleash?
